How Long To Wait Between LED Facial And Ombre Lip Tattoo

An ombre lip tattoo is still a form of skin trauma – albeit a controlled one. Even when done gently and correctly, the tissue needs to have a baseline that’s not frazzled. The better condition your lips are in, the more predictable that final healed colour of yours will be, which is just as well, given how many variables are at play.

Most people go wrong here by treating red light therapy as inconsequential because it’s non-invasive. I mean, on its own, a red light treatment is usually pretty mild, but it can still tweak circulation, sensitivity, hydration levels, and, just generally, how inflamed the tissue looks on any given day.

How LED Affects The Tissue

Red light therapy is used to support collagen production and calm down the inflammation, which sounds great, and it can be. But right after an LED facial, the skin can still be more reactive than you’d like, especially if you’re already dealing with a compromised or dry barrier.

When I do lip blush or lip micropigmentation, I want the lip tissue to behave itself. If the lips are puffy, flaky, over-stimulated or just a bit sensitive, the pigment is gonna implant unevenly. That can mean you end up with weaker retention after the scab comes off, patchy spots once it heals, or even colour that comes in cooler or lighter than you expected. Learn more about lip blushing.

Expectation vs Reality

Expectation: One quick LED session right before tattooing will prep the skin and make the healing a breeze. Reality – if your lips are irritated, the appointment’s gonna be harder to get through, and your lip blush healing is gonna feel a lot worse than it had to.

I’ve had a client in Melbourne who went and had a facial the day before her lip appointment. The LED itself wasn’t the issue – it was the exfoliation around the mouth that really caused the problem. At first glance, the lips looked fine, but when I stretched the tissue, I noticed dryness and micro-flaking. We ended up having to postpone. A bit of an annoyance that week, yeah. Better than having a poor result for the next two years, though.

Know What Not To Do

Prepping properly is rarely glamorous, but it shows up in the final results. If you want smooth colour and a smooth appointment, don’t do anything that’s gonna stir up the lip area just before treatment.

This is also what catches clients off guard: many beauty treatments that bill themselves as “gentle” turn out to be pretty unforgiving when layered with other treatments. Skin likes routines, but it hates marathon sessions out of the blue.

Pre-Appointment Checklist

You really should steer clear of those LED facials for at least a week before getting your ombre lip tattoo – and go for 10-14 days if your treatment included any exfoliating, or you know your skin’s super sensitive.

You’ll want to knock off retinol, strong spot treatments, and chemical peels near the mouth about the time your artist told you to.

Be aware of the sunburn, windburn and dry lips prone to happening in Melbourne’s annoyingly dry and windy seasons.

Make sure to tell your artist about anything and everything – so that includes fillers, Botox, cold sores, allergies and any work you’ve had done on your teeth recently.

Fill out your patch test and consent forms like you mean it – no time to be mysterious today.

Who Should Delay Treatment

Its probably best to put off getting your ombre lip tattoo if you’ve got an active cold sore, broken skin, recent swelling from filler, dermatitis around the mouth, any risk of infection, or if your skin has gone super sensitive after a facial. If you’re dealing with an autoimmune flare-up, a recent illness, or you think you’re expecting too much from a single session, then slow down and talk it over with your artist first.

If you only have time for one session before an event, focus on getting a nice shape and some softness going rather than trying to get in a bold colour. A single session can make a noticeable improvement, but most ombre lip tattoo clients end up needing a touch-up at 6 to 10 weeks to get the balance and density just right.

Using This Timing Guide

Ideally, we’d like to have a clear timeline for booking your appointment and avoiding any overlap with other treatments. This is the same kind of plan I’d run through with you while we’re in-studio, mapping things out

Prices for ombre lip tattoos in Melbourne can vary, but generally sit around the middle hundreds in AUD, and additional touch-ups and corrections will cost extra. As it turns out, it’s way more cost-effective to get it right in the first place than to fix things later.

Aftercare and Getting Back to LED

How long do you need to wait after getting LED therapy for a lip tattoo? And when can you start using your LED again after getting a tattoo? Personally, I usually say wait til the surface of the lips is fully healed and you’re done with the scabs and flakes – that’s usually around 2 to 4 weeks, but if your healing is being super slow, then just wait a bit longer.

Here’s a super simple healing timeline to keep in mind: swelling usually settles in 24 to 72 hours, then you might start seeing flakes around days 3-5, and the colour will gradually fade over the next few weeks as the lips heal. And of course, full and settled colour will probably look its best after six weeks – not on day two when everything looks bright and a bit over the top.

The key to doing cosmetic tattoo work right is what happens before the tattooing even begins. Getting the timing of an appointment just right gives me a much better canvas to work with; it also makes the healing process a lot smoother for you and reduces the chances of problems like patchy retention and delays along the way.

If you’re wondering about how long you should wait after red light therapy before getting a lip tattoo, the safest bet is at least a week, two weeks if your skin is feeling inflamed, flaky or has been recently treated. FAQ

Does Red Light Therapy Do Anything To My Tattoo?

Not usually once a tattoo has fully healed, but you definitely don’t want to expose a fresh cosmetic tattoo to it too early. The irritation and heat from red light can slow down the healing process.

Can You Overdo Red Light Therapy?

The thing is, you can overdo it with just about any skin treatment – especially if you’re doing it too often, or combining it with other treatments that are also working away at your skin. And before lip micropigmentation? Even more so. More is not always better, trust me on this one.

How Long Do I Have To Wait After A Facial Before Starting Red Light Therapy?

It really depends on the type of facial you got – if it was a pretty gentle treatment, your skin therapist might clear you to go ahead sooner, but if it was a bit more intense – say, some strong exfoliation – then you’re best off waiting until your skin feels calm and settled again.

Does Red Light Therapy Affect Permanent Makeup?

Yeah, it can definitely affect how comfortable the area feels, and potentially the healing time of a fresh procedure. That’s why I always recommend giving it a bit of space and avoiding red light therapy for a while after your appointment.

Can I Get LED Therapy Before Getting Permanent Makeup?

You can, but timing really is everything on this one. Generally, I’d say leave at least 7 days between getting a lip tattoo and doing an LED treatment – and longer if you’ve got any irritation, peeling or added treatments going on in the mix.
